Age-related decline in eyesight is common among people in their 60s or older. Some eye problems such as presbyopia and cataracts are quite normal. Nearly all individuals will experience one or several of related eye problems as the body continues to age. Slightly different, more serious age-related eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy affect only a portion of elderly people. But these conditions cause really severe vision deterioration and even vision loss.

PRK Laser Eye Surgery: LASIK Without a Flap


PRK (or photorefractive keratectomy) is the second most popular laser eye surgery in the United States, behind LASIK. The question of PRK Vs LASIK is common for consumers interested in laser vision correction.

 

Like LASIK, PRK uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea. But in PRK, no corneal flap is created with a microkeratome or femtosecond laser prior to the corneal reshaping.

Instead, the central portion of the thin outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is removed from the eye, usually after being loosened with a dilute alcohol solution. The excimer laser treatment is then applied to the underlying corneal tissue (the stroma) to reshape the eye. read more…

Cleaning Contact Lens Cases Essential to Eye Health, But Doctors Differ on How To Do It

Despite the importance of proper care of contact lens storage cases to prevent eye infections, eye care professionals have differing opinions about how contact lens wearers should clean their lens cases.

That is the finding of two researchers who published their report in this month’s issue of the journal Contact Lens Spectrum.

Nicole Olboeter, BSc (Rodenstock, Germany) and Sibylle Scholtz, PhD (Abbott Medical Optics, Germany) conducted a review of scientific literature regarding contact lens-related eye infections and lens care recommendations published by contact lens manufacturers, eye care organizations and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). read more…
